René Pape to cancel MET 125th Anniversary Gala on Sunday

Due to illness René Pape will not appear at the MET Gala this Sunday. Instead, John Tomlinson will sing from Boris Godunov and James Morris will sing Wotan. And John Relyea will sing "Veau D´Or".

Furthermore, René Pape will be replaced by Kwangchul Youn in the April 4th premiere of Lohengrin in Berlin.

I'm sincerely worried about René Pape..what happened to him on stage didn't look any good...I've seen people with that same trouble, relatives of mine. I hope I'm absolutely wrong this time , really !

I am extremely worried that it is something serious as well. Why else would someone his age cancel high-profile performances for weeks - and at the MET gala he only had two sing two excerpts?

Mostly Opera I trust you would publish it here if you knew what was wrong with him?

Do you know if Pape has cancelled Lohengrin on 4 April as well?

""Do you know if Pape has cancelled Lohengrin on 4 April as well?""
Well.. I just hope that Rene will use this time for himself and he will find a right way to go.
Last 2 years he really had some serious problems, suppose - I understand what Kenderina meant.
I also hope we are wrong.
This singer is one of the most talented guys I've ever met. And he just HAS TO take a very good care of himself.

The last anonymous and kb: Let us not cross the line between general information/discussion and gossip, no matter how well-meaning the intentions are.

Generally, I don´t think the private lives of others (ie. people I do not know personally) is a suitable discussion topic for this forum, and, may I add, I don´t find it interesting either.

I shall not publish inside information here, whether I have it or not..

This, of course, is the correct thing to do. In Pape's case, however, he has been forthcoming with issues in his private life, revaling how they have impacted his interpretation of the King Marke role in Tristan:

Quote

"King Marke is one of my favorite roles," said Pape, adding that the old King whose fiancee's heart was stolen by his trusted friend Tristan "is a very special role if you have had something similar happen to you, if you have had a good friend take over your wife." That is all he will say on the subject, except to confess that "this is what happened to me."

Unquote

In this instance, he has publicly discussed the issue and he has connected it with his work as an artist.

Of course, this does not mean that whatever may be going on now either healthwise or relationship wise is any of our business. It is not, unless and until he chooses to publicly discuss it.

DB - even in that case I wouldn´t chose to publish such information here.

Pape cancelled the Lohengrin! Youn sings Heinrich. This are very bad news.

According to his press spokesman, Rene Pape has been battling a very bad cold and has been advised by his doctor to cancel singing engagements until he has fully recovered.

So this is the official reason.

Talking of singers in trouble - Once again Ben Heppner has let his public down cancelling his concert performances of GOTTERDAMMERUNG with Mark Elder and the Halle. He is to be replaced by Lars Cleveman (whoever he is). As far as I'm concerned that is it - I won't book for Heppner in future.he has let me down too many times and, even when he does appear, he is often in such poor voice that one wishes he hadn't. It's such a pity - I have seen him give some superb performances but he just can't rely on his voice anymore. Time to stop maybe? I would be interested to hear other people's views/experiences.

Concerning Lars Cleveman who made a fantastic jump in last night in Zürich for Siegfried. He is now the 1st runner up.

I see that Heppner failed to make the first night of Siegfried at Salzburg as well and was again replaced by a virtual uknown. If I had paid the exorbitant prices that Salzburg charges I would be banging on the door asking for my money back!
