TCHERNIAKOV - LIVE PERFORMANCES REVIEWED BY MOSTLY OPERA

  1. I find Tcherniakov to be one of the most interesting opera directors active at the moment, and am always very much looking forward to his productions. From what I've seen so far, I believe that his best stagin by far is Eugen Onegin at the Bolshoi. Don't judge it by the DVD which was strangely shot and edited and doesn't do the production any justice. To me this is the most profound staging of this opera in decades, which managed to take a new look at it, but still remained true both to Pushkin and Tchaikovsky. This is one show I see every time I go to Moscow. (Let's see what he does with Ruslan this week - Arte will be showing it on 13-14.11)
This might not be so well known outside of Russia, but he has also done phenomenal Rake's Progress and Wozzeck at the Bolshoi (Wozzeck was even shown on arte). And there were Kitezh and Tristan at the Mariinsky. I haven't seen any of these two productions, but they've got some good press in Russia, though it seems that Gergiev is not a big fan, and both productions haven't been staged for quite some time. Kitezh, though will get it's European premiere this season in Amsterdam.
