Around Bayreuth: Hohenschwangau Castle

For practical information, see the post on Neuschwanstein Castle.

Hohenschwangau Castle (transl: Castle of the High Swan County) was Ludwig II´s childhood residence and the place where he first met Richard Wagner.

Not as impressive as the close-by Neuschwanstein Castle, it is nevertheless well worth a visit. As with Neuschwanstein, the interior is rather dark with heavy wall-paintings again with numerous references to the German mythology including the Niebelungen lied and the Swan Knight legend.
