René Pape cancels Hans Sachs in Berlin 2008

René Pape is cancelling his role-debut as Hans Sachs at the Berlin State Opera next year. He will be replaced by James Morris. This will be James Morris´ first Hans Sachs in Europe (and his first time working with Daniel Barenboim as well).

I wonder why René Pape has cancelled the role? It would have been such a big step in his career. Maybe it's too soon for him singing it next year. I know it took James Morris 5 years to learn it.

His cancellation came almost immediately after 3 concerts with Christian Thielemann (and Robert Dean SmithI performing excerpts from Meistersinger/Hans Sachs and Walkure/Wotan, which I believe will be issued on CD.
From what I have heard (I haven´t heard the concerts myself) Thielemann was flooding the singers with a maybe-not-quite-necessay orchestra tour de force.

However, unconfirmed (and I am not sure how reliable) rumours tell me that Rene Pape may sing Hans Sach in Glyndebourne 2009

UPDATE: Based on an interview with a German opera magazine, it seems like Bryn Terfel is scheduled to sing Hans Sachs in Glyndebourne in 2009...Unless, of course he is to share the part with Pape (which I definitely wouldn´t advise Terfel to do - since I´m afraid René Pape will make him look rather second-ratish in the role). Or maybe Terfel cancels for a change..he still has plenty of time to do it...nothing like last-minute cancellations to get noticed in the media.
